Today, taking our neighbors advice we headed towards Estes Park, CO. I awoke with a headache and since the mosquitoes were out of control, we left a thank you note for our neighbors and headed South for some food. We eventually found a nice coffee shop with Wi-Fi. We had a light breakfast and uploaded yesterday’s blog entry. I felt better.
Back on the road we stumbled upon the Devil’s Backbone and stretched our legs while exploring.

It was hot again today. Temperatures were well into the high 90’s and low 100’s. The Jeep ran well and I am curious how my gas mileage will be affected now that we are doing some climbing and gaining altitude. We drove up Big Thompson Canyon on our way to Estes Park and ultimately Rocky Mountain National Park. Big Thompson Canyon was amazing, there were no turn-out for pictures, but we had the Go-Pro camera rolling. Hopefully it captures how amazing it was. Yesterday rolling desert plains, today snow capped mountains.
Camping was cheap tonight, $10 with our Parks pass, however the campground was clear-cut recently. Ironically it is called Timber Creek even though it is lacking timber (40.378655,-105.851663). That said it was safe and quiet. In speaking with a ranger I learned they lost 98% of the trees at the camp to Pine Bark beetle, a native species.…………….Time out! A herd of elk is crossing 30 yards in, scratch that, 10 yards by our campsite!!
We also saw a moose at the back of camp a half hour before the elk!
