Pelicans, Snakes and Snappers, oh my!

We had a good night at Merritt Reservoir and with good advice from Nebraskan neighbors we planned to head for Chimney Rock.  But first we had to check out the Snake Falls just below the reservoir.   And about that reservoir, it has pelicans?
Fresh water Pelicans?
It took a bit of backtracking, but we eventually saw the hand painted sign to Snake Falls.  It was worth the search, and I enjoyed a cold shower to start the day.  Tyler opted out but took my picture.

A cold shower.
Refreshed and off to a good start we headed West to Bridgeton and the rocks.  In Bridgeton we found a small museum of the Oregon, Mormon and Pony Express, all of which passed within miles of one another along the North Platte River.  First we saw Courthouse and Jailhouse Rocks.  They are unique in that the stand in stark contrast to the rolling dessert prairie.

Next we drove to Scotts Bluff Nat. Monument (41.836929,-103.700565).  Tyler earned another badge while we learned about the area.

The nearest park according to our map book was in Wyoming, so off we were.  We left Nebraska via some obscure County Road, not really sure when we entered Wyoming.  We found the park and were greeting by a grouchy gatekeeper.
"None shall pass"
The park was mostly deserted and while I got to setting up camp (41.708998,-104.193618) and some house cleaning.  Our nice neighbors sent over a welcoming committee with firewood kindling and paper before inviting us to swim and join their campsite.  James, Theresa, Kim and boys made us feel very welcome in their home state of Wyoming.

Mosquitoes are bad around here, bug spray is their appetizer.

On another note I saw a Jeep Comanche in Piere, SD a couple days ago.  First one all trip.  they really are rare little trucks.

Fuel also is now closely watched as filling stations are few and far between.  Water too, we added four gallons while at Wal-Mart the other day and three more at this camp.   It doesn't look like it, but this is the desert.

Trivia for you today.  What movie is the snapper picture referencing?
